Man, 59, drowns in river

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 59-year-old man who is believed to have drowned on Saturday while bathing in a river in Arima. According to police reports, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Hector Phillip of Tumpuna Road, Arima, was with his family and friends at a popular river in the vicinity of the Heights of Guanapo, when he encountered difficulties in the water.

Phillip, police said, was heard screaming for help and seen thrashing in the river as he tried to keep his head above water.
However, before his friends and relatives could reach him, Phillip disappeared under the water. They notified the police and emergency health services, but while they waited, Phillip’s body reportedly surfaced.

DMO Indarsingh viewed the body and pronounced Phillip dead. He then ordered the body be taken to the Forensic Science Centre in St James for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death.
