A 21-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of security guard Darryl Baptiste who was shot dead at his workplace a week ago.
Collin Lawrence of Maracas, St Joseph faced Senior Magistrate Nanette Forde-John in the San Fernando Magistrates Court. She read the indictable charge that last week Tuesday at St Clements Junction, Ste Madeleine, he murdered Baptiste.
Police prosecutor Cleyon Seedan said that the file will be sent to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and documents will be handed over to the defence. Lawrence was represented by attorneys Sean Sobers and Richard Valere.
Sobers said that his client who was arrested on Tuesday night was beaten by the police and charged two days later. He said that Lawrence had requested an attorney be present but this was denied.
Forde-John noted the complaints and adjourned the case to July 7.
Baptiste, 38 of Tarodale was at Lucky Seven Bar in Ste Madeleine, a police report said, when he was involved in an altercation with a group of men. He was shot thee times and pronounced dead at the San Fernando General Hospital.
