A 51-YEAR-OLD pipe-fitter was beaten to death at a bar in Gasparillo, shortly after midnight yesterday.
Kenneth Marshall, of St Fabien Road, Gasparillo, was returning home after attending the Independent Liberal Party’s (ILP) launch of its local government election campaign at Gasparillo Junction when he was attacked.
Police said Marshall was sitting on a bench outside the bar, along Caratal Road, when he was approached by three men at around 12.10 a.m.
A relative said: “He went to the political meeting in Gasparillo. He went to the bar, which is not too far from his home. He was sitting alone when these men come up to him. He even hugged one of the men when they asked how he was going. No one knows why they started arguing. He just get up and walked into the bar because he didn’t want any trouble.”
The three men followed Marshall inside the bar and surrounded him.
“One of the men had brass knuckles on and he started punching him.
Then they took a stool and began hitting him with it. He fell to the ground.
One of the men pick up a stone and bashed his head in,” the relative said.
Police said Marshall was unresponsive when he was struck on the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The three suspects escaped in a car, police said.
The Gasparillo Police Station was contacted and a team of officers, led by ASP Sidharrie and including Inspectors Williams and Yearwood, found the car abandoned along Union Road, Marabella.
A search was conducted and two men were arrested.
The suspects—a 31-year-old Union Hall, San Fernando, man and a 32-year-old man of Sea View Drive, Marabella—were interrogated by investigators yesterday.
Police were searching for the third suspect last evening.
Marshall’s battered body was removed to the Forensic Science Centre in St James where an autopsy was expected to be performed yesterday.
