Man held for shooting at pregnant teen

A 50-YEAR-OLD Tabaquite man who allegedly shot at a pregnant teenager during a land dispute on Sunday was caught in the nearby forests hiding from police.

The man was detained for the shooting of Akida John, a 19-year-old who is five months pregnant.

Police said that, around 4 p.m., John and the suspect were seen arguing over a parcel of land.

During the dispute, the neighbour took up a shotgun and fired at the teenager, police were told.

John was struck in her leg, and buttocks and grazed on the stomach.

The suspect ran into the nearby bushes to escape. Johnís relatives at Alleyne Road, Tabaquite, were told of the incident, and Brasso and Gran Couva police and Central Division Task Force were called in.

John was taken for treatment at the Couva District Hospital where she was treated and discharged.

Corporal Kubir, Constable Jones and other police officers were assisted by residents as they combed the nearby forests searching for the gunman.

An hour after the shooting, police arrested the suspect, who was allegedly found with a cutlass.

Police took him to the Couva Police Station, where he could face charges of wounding with intent. Police officers were to return to the scene and the forests yesterday in search of the shotgun.
