AN elderly man was killed instantly yesterday morning when he was struck by a car while attempting to cross the Churchill- Roosevelt Highway in Valsayn.
The dead man has since been identified as Peter Kallicharan. Up to yesterday evening, investigating officers were unable to confirm the man’s age or where he lived. However, they said he appeared to be in his mid-60s.
Officers said around 6.15 a.m., Kallicharran was crossing the highway from north to south close to Super Pharm, when a silver Toyota Corolla, PBY 4669, driven by Donny Kircon slammed into him along the east-bound lane of the highway.
Kallicharan was thrown several feet upon impact and died at the scene. Officers of the St Joseph and Tunapuna Police Stations went to the scene and later detained Kircon, who was being questioned at the St Joseph station up to yesterday evening.
Kallicharan’s death has now pushed the country’s road fatality for the year so far to 31.
In another incident, there was a non-fatal eight-car smash up along the highway around 9 a.m. Officers said the accident occurred close to Price Smart in Mausica.
The driver of one of the cars reportedly received a “bad drive” from another motorist causing his car to smash into another, creating the domino effect, said police. —RR
