Man, 24, third Laventille killing

Three murders have occurred in the area of Dorata Street, Laventille, in the last few days.

The latest victim is 24-year-old Miguel Clinton.

According to police, Clinton was standing close to his home at Dorata Street, Laventille, on Sunday evening.

While doing so, he noticed a man not known in the area. To satisfy his curiosity, Clinton approached the man and proceeded to question him. It was while doing so that the man pulled out a gun and shot Clinton several times about the body, killing him on the spot.

This was how police described the events surrounding the construction worker's death. Investigators said they did not believe Clinton was the gunman's initial target, but became his victim after he questioned his reason for being in the area.

An autopsy was performed on Clinton's body at the Forensic Sciences Centre in St James yesterday by pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov which concluded he died as a result of injuries consistent with multiple gunshot wounds.

Speaking to the Express following the autopsy, his cousin, Akilah Osbourne, said Clinton's family members were in a state of shock over his killing, but they were all trying to "stay strong for each other."

He is the third person to be gunned down in the area in as many days. On Saturday morning, 11-year-old Kareem Alphonso was shot dead while in the company of two men near his father's home at Dorata Street — a stone's throw away from where Clinton was killed. Kareem lived at Church Street, Laventille.

Shortly before midnight on Saturday, residents had gathered to mourn Alphonso death when they heard several loud explosions.

Upon investigating, they found the bullet-riddled body of Anton Alves, 24, lying along the roadway along Dorata Street.

He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital by a resident in the area but died around 5 a.m. the following day.

Investigations into all three killings are ongoing.

The murder toll for the year to date is now 275, according to an Express tally.
