Man changes plea in baseball bat attack

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

A MAN who allegedly used a baseball bat to smash a car during an argument denied in court that he caused $8,800 worth in damage.

Richard Heeralal was charged that on February 24 at Tarouba, Marabella, he maliciously damaged Brian Samaroo's car.

Heeralal initially pleaded guilty when he appeared before Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Rajendra Rambachan on the charge laid by Corporal McIntosh.

But after the police report alleged that he smashed the lights, side mirror, windscreen and bonnet of the silver Honda Civic with a bat he took from Samaroo during an argument, Heeralal said he was not guilty of the offence.

He claimed no bat was used and the damage was not that extensive.

The bat was shown during the hearing.

Rambachan told Heeralal, who is on $15,000 bail, to return to court on October 19.

The trial is expected to be heard on that day, with one prosecution witness taking the stand.
