The son of a Penal businessman who threatened to shoot residents was detained by police yesterday.

Southwestern Division officers responded to reports that a man, armed with a gun, was threatening to shoot residents of Railway Road, Batchiya Village, Penal.

A team of officers, including police constables Badree, Jamaldin, Hosein and WPC Makhid visited the area and intercepted a black Ford Ranger van along Salt Mine Trace, Siparia Old Road, Fyzabad, around 1.45 a.m.

The vehicle was searched and officers recovered a shotgun and a 12-gauge cartridge.

The driver, a 31-year-old man was detained.

Police said the suspect is the son of a Penal contractor.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, a 34-year-old man remains in critical condition at hospital, after his left arm was almost severed in an attack on Friday night.

Police were last evening searching for the suspect.

Kevin Alfred, of Caratal Road, Gasparillo, was liming with friends near his home when he was involved in an argument with another man around 8 p.m.

Police said the man went to his car and returned with a Chinese chopper.

He chopped Alfred several times on his hand.

The suspect escaped.

Alfred was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital.
