A man who allegedly breached a protection order to stay away from a female relative died in police custody on Tuesday night.

An autopsy found that 59-year-old Hollis Ramnath died of heart failure.

Police said Ramnath, a labourer, began complaining of chest pains, while being processed at La Brea Police Station.

He was taken to Point Fortin District Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

Ramnath, of Rousillac, was arrested around 5 p.m, on an outstanding warrant. He died two hours later.

Police said the father of three went to the woman's home and began arguing on September 12. A report was filed that day, but Ramnath was not at home when the officers arrived.

Investigators returned to the house on Tuesday and arrested him. He was taken to the La Brea station to be charged with breaching a protection order.

But Ramnath began feeling unwell and was gasping for breath, police said.

He was placed in a police vehicle and taken to hospital.
