Man gunned down while liming

By Jensen LaVende

HOMICIDE detectives are now investigating the killing of a 27-year-old man from Upper Village Council Street, Laventille.

According to police reports, Renato Julien, his mother, Karen Phillip, and others were liming close to their home around 7.45 p.m., when two gunmen, without warning, opened fire on them.

The group scattered, leaving Julien behind. He was shot several times and died at the scene.

Julien had Down's syndrome.

Phillip was shot once in the lower back and is warded at the Port of Spain General Hospital, in a serious condition.

Police say while the victim was not involved in any gang activity, his death is as a result of ongoing gang war in the area.

ASP Ajith Persad, Cpl Charles Budri and Insp Sahadeo Singh, of the Port of Spain Division, visited the scene; while PC Bellile, of the Homicide Bureau Region 1, is spearheading investigations.

Julien's killing pushed the murder toll to 78 for the year so far, according to an Express tally; while for the same period last year, 61 murders were recorded.
