Man held, two at large after cutlass attack

ONE man was arrested and two more are expected to give themselves up to the police by noon today after they chopped an El Dorado, Tunapuna man and left him for dead last Friday.

The victim, Jessie Balchan, 21, of Caura Royal Road, El Dorado was at a jobsite near Costcutters Supermarket at El Dorado when at around 2 p.m. he was approached by three men he knew.

The men attacked him.

Two of the men, armed with cutlasses, began chopping Balchan several times about his body.

As Balchan attempted to defend himself both his hands were almost severed. The men ran off when Balchan slumped to the ground.

People heard Balchan's screams and contacted the ambulance services and the police.

Balchan was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope where he remained in critical condition up to last night.

Police detectives from the Tunapuna CID later interviewed Balchan at the hospital which led to the arrest of one of the suspects, aged 22, of Jitman Drive, Khandahar in Tunapuna last Friday night.

The other two suspects remain at large but the Sunday Express understands that they both contacted the police and were making arrangements to turn themselves in today.

Tunapuna CID officers are continuing investigations.
