Man in court for WPC's death

By Susan Mohammed

A 66-YEAR-OLD Penal driving instructor is expected to appear in court today charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of a woman police constable who was killed while on duty along the Solomon Hochoy Highway over a year ago.

The suspect, of Mahase Road, is expected to appear in the Couva Magistrates' Court in connection with the death of WPC Angie Beckles-Gordon.

Beckles-Gordon, 44, of Roystonia, Couva, the sister of attorney Keith Beckles, died on December 7, 2011, while performing duties near the Preysal Flyover, where road works were being conducted on the highway.

Police said Beckles-Gordon was standing behind a large sign which indicated to motorists to proceed in a particular direction on the highway, when the car driven by the suspect knocked down several cones before crashing into the sign.

The large sign, police said, fell on Beckles-Gordon, and pinned her to the ground.

She died hours later while undergoing medical treatment.
