Man in court for granny's murder

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin

THE MAN charged with murdering grandmother Carmen Ramjattan appeared in court yesterday, with his attorney asking he be sent to St Ann's Hospital.

Defendant Ramchand Doodlal appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando Magistrates' Court.

Defence attorney Jason Jackson told the court he tried speaking with Doodlal but was only able to get partial information from his client.

He said Doodlal's name was called four times before the court yesterday but the 43-year-old did not acknowledge it.

Doodlal, of La Romaine, kept looking at the ceiling during his court appearance.

Jackson asked that the man be sent to the hospital for evaluation.

Wellington said he was concerned that Doodlal was sent to St Ann's and then could not be found.

Jackson said he was unaware that such a situation has ever occurred, and, if so, there should be an enquiry into such matters.

Wellington refused the application and remanded Doodlal in prison custody until March 18.

Ramjattan, 70, of Sunkist Drive, Phillipine, was found bludgeoned to death on February 20 at her Phillipine home.

Her stolen car was traced and a man was found driving the Nissan Almera along M2 Ring Road, Debe.
