HOMICIDE detectives are awaiting the results of an autopsy on the body of a 50-year-old woman, who was found dead in her Santa Cruz home yesterday, to determine the exact cause of death.
Officers said the woman had problems with her liver and it was possible she may have died as a result of this.
However, residents in the area where the woman lived said they were certain she was beaten to death.
Around 9.30 a.m., police were called to the home of Janet Alexander at Cakes Land, La Canoa Road.
Residents said during the early morning hours they heard screams coming from the woman's home.
A male relative of the woman noticed she was lying motionless on the ground of one of the bedrooms and called Emergency Health Services (EHS).
When paramedics arrived on the scene, they pronounced Alexander dead and in turn contacted the police.
The residents added that a man would usually physically assault the woman, with her sometimes having to be warded at hospital.
They said on several occasions they had cause to call police while the woman was being beaten, but the police never responded.
Officers said they could not confirm exactly how the woman had died.
The male relative was questioned at the scene and later taken to Santa Cruz Police Station where he was being questioned up to last night.
