A DIEGO MARTIN man, who minutes earlier had been released on bail, was shot seven times about the body yesterday afternoon as he sat in his father’s car outside the Port of Spain Prison on Frederick Street.

The victim, Ravindra Beharry, 28, remained at Port of Spain General Hospital in critical condition up to last night.

Sookram Beharry, the victim’s father, said on Wednesday his son appeared before a Port of Spain magistrate on assault charges after his son and a neighbour had a dispute.  He was granted bail but, at the time, his family was unable to secure the services of a bailor.

Yesterday morning, however, they made arrangements with a bailor and a justice of the peace that he be bailed out of the Port of Spain prison.

Beharry said they went to the prison and by 12.45 p.m. they were out.

His son sat in the front passenger seat of the family’s Mazda 626 and he was driving.

Beharry said they exited a car park adjacent to the prison and when they got to the corner of New Street and Frederick Street, the attack occurred.

Beharry said a tall, dark-skinned man in a white vest and three-quarter pants approached the car and opened fire. Beharry said after his son was shot, “he just told me to drive”.

“I was very frighten,” said the father.

He added that his son was not involved in any illegal activity and “I really don’t know what would have caused this, to tell you the truth.”

He said that as they drove off, they first opted to head to Central Police Station on St Vincent Street, but his son was bleeding so heavily they decided to go to the hospital instead.

Beharry said while at hospital the police visited him and told him he had to drive his car back to the crime scene as it had to  be investigated and photographed.

Port of Spain CID officers are continuing investigations.

In an unrelated incident yesterday, 29-year-old Silas Jackson, of Bagatelle, Diego Martin, was shot in the hip while in the car park of Linda’s Bakery in Glencoe around 2 p.m.

He was taken to Port of Spain General Hospital where he remained in stable condition up to last night.

Police said Jackson and some friends were parked at the bakery when a car pulled alongside them and one of its occupants shot at Jackson.

The gunman and his cohorts then fled the scene.

Four Roads police are continuing investigations.
