LEADER of Government Business Dr Roodal Moonilal said yesterday local government elections have not been postponed, but there also has been no decision on when they will be held.
Moonilal, Member of Parliament for Oropouche, spoke with reporters during a walkabout within his constituency.
The Minister of Housing and Environment said: “These are matters that the Prime Minister and the Government will determine. There is no determination on this as yet, but local government elections are not postponed. There is no determination on that as yet, discussions are ongoing on this issue.”
Moonilal’s comment came days after sources said that the Government was seeking legal advice on the possibility of postponing the local government elections, which are constitutionally due by October 26.
Moonilal, along with officials of the Housing Development Corporation, Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission, and from his constituency office, met with residents of Phillipine and Esperance.
He said walkabouts in his constituency during the mid-term allowed for assessments of the work done and what needed to be done.
“It is really a mid-term walkabout programme that we have embarked upon for assessment and intervention in the constituency. This was planned a long time ago so this is nothing new. I want to take a first-hand look at what we are doing and what new we have to do in all the areas in our constituencies.
“There may well be areas that we are yet to visit because of the size of the constituency,” the Minister said.
