Mother refuses to bail out girl, 15

By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin South Bureau

THE MOTHER of a 15-year-old girl yesterday refused to take the bail of her daughter after she claimed that the girl was uncontrollable.

Magistrate Nalini Singh remanded the teen in custody.

The girl appeared before Singh in the Princes Town Second Court yesterday charged with breaking into her parents' home, and larceny.

The magistrate said she was willing to grant the child $10,000 bail with her mother as surety.

But when Singh explained that in standing bail the mother will be held responsible for having her daughter appear before the court at each hearing or be liable to pay $10,000, the mother interjected.

"We have her in court for uncontrollable behaviour. She's appearing tomorrow (today)," she said.

Singh remanded the girl to the juvenile section of the Women's Prison until today.

The girl was charged with breaking and entering the mother's house at Basseterre, Moruga, last Thursday and stealing two gold earrings and a shirt. The items were together valued $870.

She pleaded guilty. But after police prosecutor Sgt Subhas Ramkhelawan read the facts, the girl denied the allegations.

"I didn't break in the house. I live there and I have permission to be there anytime I want," she said. She also denied taking the items.

The teenager will face the Second Court again today.

A 15-year-old boy will also reappear before Singh today after being charged with robbery with violence against a woman.

Singh was told tracing of the boy's criminal record had not yet been done.

"I am minded to grant bail but I can't do so because there is no tracing," she said.

It is alleged that the teen robbed and used personal violence against the woman on August 27 at Edward Trace in Princes Town.

The woman was robbed of $5,900, a $1,500 cellphone, a passport valued $250 and identification card valued at $20.

Attorney Dons Waithe said his client had been in custody since last Thursday and police officers had enough time to do a criminal background check.

"He's a minor. I don't understand how he hasn't been traced as yet," Waithe said.

Singh gave the officers until today to have the information. She remanded the teen until that time.

"You see, this is how crime starts, you know," the magistrate said.
