Nela Khan presides for first time

NEW Deputy Speaker Nela Khan presided over her first session of Parliament earlier than expected yesterday due to a special reconvening of the House of Representatives.

With the Parliament on vacation and House Speaker Wade Mark overseas, it fell to Khan to chair the debate on the Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) (Amendment) Bill, 2012 at Tower D, International Waterfront Centre, Port of Spain.

Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley took the opportunity during his contribution to congratulate Khan on her appointment and her first sitting. Khan is Princes Town MP

During the Cabinet reshuffle in June Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced that Khan, former parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism, would be appointed as Deputy Speaker, replacing La Horquetta/Talparo MP Jairam Seemungal.

Also at the sitting yesterday Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Collin Partap, who had been fired as Minister in the Ministry of National Security in August for allegedly refusing to take a breathalyser test. He was welcomed back to the Parliament for his first day as a back bencher. —JN
