Newborn dies in bed: autopsy inconclusive

By Susan Mohammed

A 17-day-old baby who died on Sunday suffered multiple organ failure, an autopsy found yesterday.

However, the autopsy performed on baby Shivani at Forensic Science Centre, St James, could not determine how she died.

Baby Shivani was discovered dead by her parents, Damian Scraughn, 29, and his wife, Priscilla Ramcharitar, also 29, in their home at Perseverance, Carapichaima.

According to a police report, the mother breast-fed the infant at around 5 a.m. and placed her on the bed.

At around 6.30 a.m. the mother went to check on her and found she was unresponsive.

Paramedics were called in, but they were unable to revive the infant.

The infant was taken to Couva District Health Facility, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police took statements from the child’s parents on the incident.

Investigators said there were no marks of violence on the infant’s body.

WPC Parks of the Freeport CID is continuing investigations.
