Nirad quits COP

The National Executive of the Congress of the People said yesterday it has received and accepted the resignation of general secretary Nirad Tewarie, who cited personal reasons for his resignation.

The COP said in a statement it received and accepted Tewarie's resignation at its meeting on Tuesday.

The executive thanked Tewarie for his service to the party in that position and "wishes him success in his important work in the NGO sector", the statement from COP leader Prakash Ramadhar said.

The vacancy created was filled by the executive by the appointment of Clyde Weatherhead as acting general secretary.

This appointment was made temporarily until the process for the engagement of a new general secretary via application and selection is completed.

The executive said it welcomed Weatherhead to the position and the national executive of the party.
