‘No candidate had any advantage’
n COP chairman: Voters list not circulated but...
CONGRESS of the People (COP) Elections Commission chairman Nizam Mohammed said a failure to circulate the party’s supplemental voters list for last week Sunday’s internal elections would not have given any one candidate an advantage.
In a media statement on Wednesday, the party stated that concerns had been raised about the list, about which candidates were briefed on June 7.
The list was not, however, issued to candidates on Friday June 27, as promised.
The internal leadership election was subsequently won by incumbent Prakash Ramadhar.
Other candidates were party vice-chairman Carolyn Seepersad-Bachan; Culture Minister, Dr Lincoln Douglas; and retired Army staff sergeant Rufus Foster, who withdrew days before the election and threw his support behind Seepersad-Bachan.
“The Elections Commission has received a comprehensive report from the general secretary of the COP on the process used in the preparation of this list and we are satisfied that this was done with all the necessary safeguards to ensure its integrity and provide as many members as possible with the opportunity to vote on Sunday within the rules,” stated the COP Elections Commission chairman.
“The only issue is that the list was not circulated to the candidates when it was completed, as was promised. For this omission, the general secretary takes full responsibility. “
