Off-duty policeman shot

OFF-DUTY police officer, Sherman Carter, 30, at Basilon Street, East Dry River in Port of Spain when a lone gunman approached and opened fire.

Carter was shot.

According to reports around 11.30 p.m. on Saturday, Carter and a female companion were liming on Basilon Street drinking a beer when a gunman approached.

Carter attempted to run away but the gunman opened fire. He sustained gunshot wounds to his back and left hand.

Carter, who is from Maloney, works at St Clair Police Station.

Up to press time he was listed in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Investigations are continuing into the shooting.

Carter is the second law enforcement official in the last three months to have been shot at Basilon Street.

On February 16, 44-year-old Defence Force Sgt Joseph Woodley of Five Rivers, Arouca was fatally shot while at the corner of Siparia Hill and Basilon Street.

Woodley, the father of eight-year-old Ayesha Woodley, was discovered lying face down on the roadway around 1 a.m. by police, who were responding to a report of a shooting in the area.

Woodley a member of the Defence Force for over 20 years was said to have been in the area visiting a female friend when he was ambushed. —JJ
