...Oropouche East calls on Rowley to step down

By Carolyn Kissoon

The United National Congress (UNC) Oropouche East constituency executive has called on Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley to demit office following what it sees as the vindication of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Attorney General Anand Ramlogan in the Emailgate scandal.

A media release stated that the UNC was always confident, since the issue broke 15 months ago, that Persad-Bissessar, Ramlogan and Government ministers were innocent of all the allegations.

The UNC Oropouche East constituency stated, “There was no doubt Dr Rowley initially contrived to use parliamentary immunity, rather than investigation, to exploit his party’s sectional political interest to defame the Government. “

This calculated and callous action brought the office of Leader of the Opposition and his political party, the PNM, into total disrepute by initially promulgating what he knew or certainly should have known to be an absolute falsehood, first in the Parliament and then with emboldened political mischief, continuously in the media and public domain. No further spin or obfuscation by the PNM could deflect from what is an unequivocal affidavit from the software giant, Google, that the e-mails were fake.”

The constituency executive called on its Member of Parliament, Dr Roodal Moonilal, to expose in Parliament, Rowley’s unsuitability to hold any public office. The Parliament, the release stated, was consciously used by Rowley to “drop his now exposed bomb”.

The release stated, “It was evident to all and sundry, right from the start, except to those determined members of the Opposition, that the e-mails were false, but were yet maliciously promoted by Dr Rowley as genuine. Dr Rowley has clearly again demonstrated he is unfit to be Leader of the Opposition, far more a Prime Minister of this country, the statement concluded.”
