Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has received kudos  for appointing Suruj Rambachan to run the country in her absence.

Rambachan was appointed acting Prime Minister for two days—March 10-11—while Persad-Bissessar attended a Caricom meeting in St Vincent.

It is the first time that Rambachan, Minister of Works and Infrastructure and also deputy political leader of the United National Congress (UNC), has been appointed to act as Prime Minister.

The Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce issued a release on Monday commending Persad-Bissessar on her decision and extending congratulations to Rambachan.

“Minister Rambachan, who made many strides as mayor of Chaguanas, has consistently been a diligent worker with the interests of the country at heart, who continues to work assiduously at improving the life of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago,” stated the release.

Praise also came from Rambachan’s Tabaquite constituency on his acting appointment.

Chairman of the Tabaquite constituency executive Ramdeo Ramtahal thanked the Prime Minister for confidence she bestowed on Rambachan.

“The people of Tabaquite hold Dr Rambachan in high esteem and are confident that his performance during the aforementioned period will be associated with the office that he occupies, and in this regard we would like to convey all our best wishes for every success,” stated the release.

Other persons who have acted as Prime Minister in Persad-Bissessar’s absence include Winston Dookeran, Prakash Ramadhar, Dr Roodal Moonilal, Errol McLeod, Marlene Coudray, Vernella Alleyne-Toppin and Jack Warner.
