PM: First workshop a success

The first session of the People's Partnership Government workshop has been described as a success by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

Speaking to the media just before 8 p.m. last night, following the first day of the Government's four-day workshop at the Coco Reef hotel in Tobago, Persad-Bissessar said, "We've just ended session one of the workshop and I must say it was excellent."

She said the session, which started at 4.30 p.m, allowed members of Government to actively discuss leadership and team building.

Before the session, the party held its Cabinet meeting, followed by the post-Cabinet press conference. Persad-Bissessar then met with Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA), Orville London, for an hour.

The Prime Minister said some of the objectives of the workshop are to work together as a team and have a sound understanding of their roles and functions as Ministers of Government.

Referring to differing views of members of Government on the issue of hanging, Persad-Bissessar said that was "a debate in the media that shouldn't be, if you have a Cabinet, you come to the Cabinet, you sit and talk and that way we can discuss and have that respect for each other, that confidentiality at the end of it that when we take a decision, it is a collective decision".

She said it is very important for Government members to work together and review their policies and promises for the way forward.

Today, at day two of the workshop, internationally acclaimed founder and director of the Harvard International Negotiation programme, Dr Daniel Shapiro, will be teaching Government the art of negotiation.

Also today, Martin Daly SC will be making a presentation and lecturing Government members on the separation of powers.
