THE death of little Jaedon Cudjoe is proof there is need for parents and guardians to act more responsibly when caring for children.
This was stated yesterday by Minister of Gender, Youth and Child Development Clifton De Coteau, who added that too often parents were handing over the responsibilities of their children to grandparents.
“I just returned in the country from Sri Lanka and I was flabbergasted when I read this in the newspaper. I ask where are the parents? As a principal, I noticed that a number of grandparents have to take on the responsibility of parents. I don’t want to make a judgment call in this because we don’t have all the information,” he said.
De Coteau said his ministry had embarked on a parenting programme to sensitise parents. “We are taking the caravan into communities to have programmes with the parents. We are also working on providing affordable nurseries to assist parents,” he said.
