Partnership rally in Tobago today

The campaign for the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election begins in earnest this weekend as the People's Partnership holds its "People's rally" in Tobago today at Old Market Square, Scarborough.

Speakers at the meeting include Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) leader Ashworth Jack, Congress of the People leader Prakash Ramadhar and Chief Servant of the National Joint Action Congress (NJAC), Makandal Daaga.

Also speaking will be new Justice Minister, Tobago-born Christlyn Moore , Tobago West MP Delmon Baker, National Security Minister Jack Warner and Finance Minister Larry Howai.

The People's Partnership is investing a lot politically in the upcoming THA election. The rally is expected to deal with the operations of the PNM-led THA and focus on the two questionable multi-million land deals- the $250 Tobago Aquatic Centre and the $320 million Shirvan THA Administrative Complex- in which the relatives of former PNM minister John Rahael are involved.

On Wednesday the Prime Minister announced that she would be asking the Ministry of Finance, Attorney General and Integrity Commission to probe the transactions, saying that they raised a number of critical issues in procurement, transparency, accountability and legality. Warner told the media on Thursday to "stay tuned" to today's rally for more information on the issue of corruption in the THA.

The issue of internal self-government in Tobago is also expected to be discussed on the platform. The People's Partnership is promising to bring a bill to amend the Constitution to give the THA authority for matters under the Fifth Schedule of the THA Act. Tobago elections are due in January 2013.
