RESIDENTS of Panoo Trace, Mohess Road, Penal, were awakened in the early hours of Sunday morning to see their neighbour's house engulfed in flames.
One neighbour said around midnight she heard screams and came outside to see the 60-year-old house ablaze.
The house was unoccupied at the time as Abigail Sookdeo, who had been renting the upstairs portion, was not at home.
The owner of the house was contacted at his Penal home around 12.15 a.m.
Firefighters from the Siparia Fire Station were also called, but the two-storey structure was destroyed before their arrival.
The wooden and concrete structure burned in a short space of time, one resident said.
He started wetting his own home but said that parts were still damaged by the blaze.
Sookdeo lost all her belongings in the fire.
The house had recently undergone renovation works and was valued at $200,000.
The cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained but residents said they experienced low voltage before the fire.
Fire officials are continuing investigations.
