A 37-year-old Mayaro woman believed to have been poisoned by her husband, who later committed suicide on Sunday, remained in critical condition at hospital.

Neltia Abraham, of Coconut Grove Village, Ortoire Village, is warded at the  Sangre Grande Area Hospital.

Police were told that her husband Steve Bain, 44, a father of two, told a child that he served Abraham a cup of tea laced with a poisonous substance, as part of her breakfast.

Police were told that after taking the first sip, Abraham complained that the tea had a bitter taste. Within minutes, she began to vomit and had diarrhoea.

Bain took Abraham to the Mayaro District Hospital and left her there. He then returned to his home, and shot himself in the chest with a licensed shotgun.

He was discovered by a male relative who went to check on him at around 11.40 a.m. He died at the Sangre Grande Area Hospital while undergoing treatment.

Constable Ramkissoon, of the Mayaro Police Station is investigating.
