A SUSPECT, wanted in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old man earlier this month, was killed yesterday during a shootout with police in San Juan.
Officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) shot and killed 26-year-old Manuel Hyland at Sunshine Avenue shortly before 9 a.m.
He was wanted for the murder of Hughwill Sargeant, who was shot dead at Bagatelle Road, Santa Cruz, on September 2.
Officers said they had received reports of two men in a car armed with guns in the San Juan area.
Upon going to Sunshine Avenue, police said they spotted the vehicle and attempted to approach the men, but they were fired upon.
Police said they returned fire, shooting Hyland.
He lived at Bagatelle Road, they said.
The second man came out of the car and escaped on foot, said police.
Officers said they placed Hyland in the police vehicle and rushed him to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
In addition to Sargeant’s murder, officers said Hyland was also wanted in connection with several firearm-related offences in the Bagatelle Road area.
Sargeant, a father of five, of Thompson Lane off Real Street, San Juan, was killed when he stopped along Bagatelle Road to change a flat tyre.
While doing so, a gunman walked up to him and shot him several times before escaping.
