Police Association awaiting PSC report on light aircraft

The Police Social and Welfare Association says it will make an official comment on the issue of the controversial light aircraft contract at the end of the Police Service Commission probe.

Speaking with the Express yesterday, Secretary of the association Michael Seales said: "The Association has no comment to make at this time, since there is currently an investigation being undertaken by the Police Service Commission and we do not want to say anything till the investigation is over."

Seales said though the association has strong views on the matter they will "stay clear" of disclosing their position till the investigation is completed.

The light aircraft contract signed by Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs has been in the front-burner, after being raised by Laventille East Morvant MP Donna Cox in Parliament two weeks ago.

Following the disclosure, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and National Security Minister John Sandy denied knowledge of the contract.

The award of a $900,772 contract was made by Gibbs to the Trinidad and Tobago Air Support Company (which was formed last year) after one of its directors, Daniel Condon, went flying with Deputy Commissioner of Police Jack Ewatski on two occasions prior to the contract being awarded.

Ewatski, in a statement last Tuesday, indicated that when he went flying with Condon, it was for pleasure, as flying is his hobby and no business was involved.
