Prakash calls for calm during election campaigns
Congress of the People (COP) political leader Prakash Ramadhar has called for “calm and civility” as the country enters a season of intense political campaigning.
Responding to a series of high-profile shooting incidents in recent days, which took the country’s murder toll to more than 300 for the year, Ramadhar stated:
“We strongly condemn these senseless acts of violence, and we mourn for the families and friends of the victims.
“These tragic events remind us of the need to redouble our efforts to combat crime and renew our commitment to civility and nonviolence.
“The upcoming elections are a critical decision point for the country, and we hope everyone will join together to call for an end to this violence in the spirit of calmness, sobriety and, most importantly, security,” Ramadhar added.
Ramadhar said the spate of recent shootings “underscored the critical work done by law enforcement personnel, and the need for additional police resources and patrols”.
“Decent, law-abiding people have the right to feel safe in their homes and their neighbourhoods,” added Ramadhar. “We must come together as one nation to demand an end to this violence.”
