President: A treasure to all mankind

A giant of a man who exemplified the enduring strength of the human spirit.

That was how Trinidad and Tobago’s President Anthony Carmona last night described Nelson Mandela  who died yesterday at the age of 95.

Following is the President’s statement:

“My wife and I are deeply saddened by the passing of His Excellency Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, former president of the Republic of South Africa, and a giant of a man who exemplified the enduring strength of the human spirit.

Whilst His Excellency may best be remembered for the decisive role he played in the fight against apartheid, it was his ability to forgive, to understand and to love unreservedly that we should all strive to emulate.

The thoughts and prayers of all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago go out to His Excellency’s family and friends and to the people of South Africa during this difficult time.

He was a humanitarian and a treasure to all mankind.”
