THREE more murders are now engaging the attention of homicide detectives.
The murder toll for 2013 up to last night was 263, compared with 281 for the corresponding period last year.
The latest murder occurred at 1.10 p.m. yesterday in Straker Village, Laventille. Police said Maxwell Yearwood, 25, was ambushed and killed just behind the Straker Village Community Centre.
Before Yearwood’s death, 48-year-old Vincent Grieg, alias “Bar”, was shot and killed at his business place, “D Farm Plattin”, just off La Horquette Valley Road, Point Cumana.
Grieg was at the compound of his business place and home when a white Toyota pick-up pulled up, a masked man came out and opened fire. Grieg was fatally shot while a friend, Raphael Deere, was shot and taken to hospital.
At the scene, relatives of Grieg said he was shot at last year and survived, and residents were confused as to why he would be targeted.
Residents said they were again confused as to who would kill Grieg, who they said would help anybody.
One relative who wished not to be identified said Grieg had no problem helping anyone and was the peacemaker in the area as he was the one all the youths would go to when they had a grievance of any kind.
She said with the death of Grieg, all the youths who used to “act up” would start back their “stupidness”.
“They start a war there, you know; with he gone, the place just open up for all them lil boys and them to...,” she trailed off before beginning to cry.
The father of five was in the process of renovating his home and expanding his business.
And, three months after being shot in the back, Port of Spain resident Namki Davis died on Monday.
Reports are that 22-year-old Davis, of East Dry River, was with a group of friends when gunmen opened fire on them in Pleasant Terrace, John John, Laventille, three months ago.
Davis, of Sunset Place, East Dry River, was kept at the Port of Spain General Hospital.
However, he was discharged some time later, with the bullet left inside, after doctors advised it was too close to his spine to be removed.
Davis was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after complaining of feeling sick. He died on Monday morning. His death is being classified by police as a murder.
