RESIDENTS of Mayo Village and surrounding communities are appealing to Member of Parliament Suruj Rambachan to fulfill his promise of better roads, or face protest action.

Residents of Mayo, Corosal Road, Bon Aventure Road, Morne Roche Quarry Road, Guaracara Tabaquite Road, Piparo and Garth Road said numerous requests have been made for roadworks to begin.

Mayo resident Fyzool Baboolal said, “We don’t want to go the way of protest because we don’t like blocking the road and burning tyres. But that was how we got the roads paved last time. We have been begging for better roads. The MP and councillor are aware of this and I believe they have been making representation. But we need some action now, as it has become unbearable. The roads are really bad, there are landslips along the way and depressions.”

Baboolal said several areas along the Mayo Road are impassable and there are no alternative routes. He said hundreds of families are affected by the bad roads.

“The residents are frustrated with these roads. We have signed petitions and made requests via the Village Council. There is a Ministry of Works sub-district office in Mayo, but still nothing has been done,” he said.

Baboolal said roads beyond Mayo Village have been repaired and paved. “I believe we are just being ignored. All around being paved, except our district,” he said.

Rambachan said he was aware of the concerns. He said numerous roads were repaired and paved during his term. “I am trying my best. This area has been neglected for over 67 years and I cannot work miracles,” he said.
