Rare books burnt
HUNDREDS of rare books were destroyed on Tuesday night as a fire gutted one of the country’s oldest book stores.
A blaze began at the Asgar Ali Book Centre, located at 90 Duke Street in Port of Spain, around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, reports stated yesterday.
Asgar Ali Book Centre is the self-proclaimed “home of rare books”.
Fire officers from the Belmont and Wrightson Road Stations responded to the blaze and battled the fire for some five hours, in an attempt to prevent it from spreading to other nearby business places.
Fire officials are said to have been successful in that regard.
The cause of the blaze is still to be determined, but initial reports state it may have begun in the manager’s office.
Investigations are continuing.
