Ravi B first on stage tonight

By Carolyn Kissoon

The 2014 Chutney Soca Monarch will crown a new winner tonight, as 20 chutney and soca artistes get ready to battle for the biggest payday in the history of the event.
Southex Promotions, producers of the annual event, announced that $4.5 million has been allocated to prizes. The winner will receive a cheque for $2 million, while the runner-up will walk away with $500,000. The third place winner will receive $300,000.
The prizes were sponsored by the Ministry of Arts and Multiculturalism. Last year’s monarch, Raymond Ramnarine, has opted out of the competition, making way for a new king or queen. Ramnarine did not return to the competition as he was not paid his full prize money last year. He is owed $200,000. Three former winners Rikki Jai, Kris “KI” Persad and Ravi “Ravi B” Bissambhar would battle to regain the title. Five women — Sally Sagram, Reshma Ramlal, Hemlata Dindial and Nadia Madoo — would attempt to create history by being the first female chutney monarch. This year four soca artestes — Blaxx, Heaven “Snakey” Charles, Edwin “Crazy” Ayoung and Olatunji — have advanced to the finals. And veteran chutney singer, Anand Yankaran, has returned. The 2014 Chutney Soca Monarch takes place at Skinner Park, San Fernando.
