Record crowd of 20,000 in Chaguanas

By Kimoy Leon Sing

Figures from Chaguanas police and army services estimated the massive crowd gathered for Carnival 2k13 Jouvert celebrations at Market Street, Chaguanas at over 20,000 yesterday.

Chaguanas Mayor Orlando Nagessar said it was the largest crowd ever gathered in the borough.

"The crowd was so thick; two large bands were not able to cross the stage at Market Street for judging," Nagessar said.

"Apart from that Carnival 2k13 Jouvert celebrations remained incident free," he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Chaguanas MP and National Security Minister Jack Warner also took note of the huge crowd but seemed more impressed with the overall quality of this year's Jouvert celebrations.

Acknowledging the hard work put on by band leaders, Warner said, "I believe our Carnival celebrations have surpassed South and can rival Port of Spain."

Many of the portrayals this year centred around what happens on Carnival Monday. There was also an interesting presentation called "Chinese come to town" done by the band, D First Time. It was a presentation full of colour that featured a Chinese Dragon Dance and tassa drumming.

Starting at 5 a.m,, Carnival Monday it seemed more like "Fantastic Friday" for revellers as band after band paraded across the stage.

SuperBlue's Fantastic Friday" and Machel Montano's "Float" were the most played songs by DJs off trucks. Revellers bounced and found various ways to get off the ground and float like Superman as Montano's songs instructs as celebrations ended around 10 a.m.
