Residents happy with Moonilal

By Mark Pouchet

The Sunday Express continues its MP Monitor series today with a look at the performance of MP Dr Roodal Moonilal in his Oropouche East constituency.

Residents are happy with the representation of the Member of Parliament for Oropouche East, Dr Roodal Moonilal.

The leader of Government business is a popular figure in his constituency and residents said last week he was accessible despite his duties as Minister of Housing.

Kumar "Fireman" Boodram of Barrackpore West told the Sunday Express during a visit to the constituency: "I think he is a pretty excellent MP because he is getting all the facilities upgraded, paving roads and laying water lines."

Boodram said Moonilal was easily accessible by phone and he said when he called him about a Self-Help programme, Moonilal got back to him within two days.

Boodram said there was still some work to be done on New Colonial Road, made uneven by the regular passage of trucks.

Businesswoman Annie Doolbar said Moonilal was a good MP and wished that he could be in the area more often.

"Although he is doing a lot, he cannot do everything because of his ministerial work and his position in Government. Most of the responsibility lies with him for Government business, so he has a big burden to carry," she said, adding that people could reach him by appointment at his constituency office or by phone.

Vegetable vendor Jaipersad "Pico" Rampersad said Moonilal's performance was excellent because of the infrastuctural work he had done throughout the area and the amount of help he gives to people.

"When the previous government was in power, we hardly get anything but since he came and this government came along, we are doing a lot better for roads and drains and water. If it is one request I can make of Mr Moonilal is that he keeps his focus on the poor people in the area because once he does that, people will remain happy," he said.

Kissoon Loorkhoorn Mowassie of Esperance Village said Moonilal was one of the youngest and brilliant minds as well as a decent man.

He said the councillors in the area also worked hard to get pavements and drainage completed and that Moonilal as an MP was the last resort if any problems crept up.

Resident Steve Ramgoolam was brief, saying that everything is good in Oropouche East and that Moonilal was working hard to get various projects completed.

Mitra Singh of Ramai Trace, who said he only got to know Moonilal within the last few months, said his MP had overseen road paving and improvement projects.

"He really is an excellent MP because he is there for the people whenever you need him. If you call him about something he gets back to you and he goes out of his way to attend events in the community. He's really a good guy," Singh said.
