Retired judges to discuss Govt’s move to hold back

Retired judges will discuss Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar decision to hold on the pensions increases tomorrow.

Head of the Retired Judges Association, retired Appeal Court Justice Zainool Hosein, told the Express yesterday the association will respond after the meeting, to Persad-Bissessar’s statement on the Judges Salaries and Pensions (Amendment) Bill, 2013 and the Retiring Allowances (Legislative Service) (Amendment) bill, 2014.

On Monday, Hosein had said there was no breach in principle with regards to the increase, and the Salary Review Commission (SRC) has consistently taken the position that the pension of retired judges does not fall within its jurisdiction.

He said judges have suffered  in silence for a long period and when  judges retire, they cannot practise in courts for ten years after retirement and no other societal group had that restriction.
