Richards sends condolences to Venezuela

President George Maxwell Richards yesterday wrote to Venezuela's Vice-President, Nicolás Maduro, and extended condolences on the death of president Hugo Chavez.

Chavez died on Tuesday after a long battle with cancer.

Richards stated the news of Chavez's death was received with "profound sorrow" by the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

"Please accept my sincerest condolences and those of my family on the irreparable loss of an exemplary leader, remarkable for his dedicated service to his country," stated Richards.

The President noted that Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela share strong, fraternal relations based on both countries' history and culture, and as such, "we commiserate with the government and people of Venezuela at this difficult time".

"I take the opportunity to re-iterate the solidarity of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and, especially, the parents and family of the deceased president. Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration and esteem," stated Richards. —AR
