Robbery bid foiled, driver shot

A 35-year-old "PH" driver was shot in his head yesterday afternoon when a bandit attempted to rob him while he was heading east along the Beetham Highway.

Police said that around 3 p.m. he picked up two men, a woman and her son along Charlotte Street and they asked to be taken to San Juan.

Police said as the car headed east in the vicinity of the Police Youth Club in Beetham Gardens, one of the men drew a pistol, announced a hold-up and demanded the man's money.

The driver refused and struggled with the bandit who shot him in the head. The car swerved off the road and the two men, the woman and the child ran into Beetham Gardens.

A team of officers from the Besson Street Police Station later rushed over to the scene and took the man to the Port of Spain General Hospital where he was immediately operated on.

Officers searched for the two men and the woman in Beetham Gardens but up to press time they were not yet found.

Besson Street CID officers are continuing investigations. —GG
