Robbery ring suspect tries to commit suicide in station

By Akile Simon

A 26-year-old man from Waterhole in Cocorite, who police said is part of a robbery ring operating in the Arima community, remains warded at hospital under police guard after he reportedly attempted to commit suicide while at the La Horquetta Police Station on Wednesday.

The suspect was found bleeding from injuries to the head and with a shoelace around his neck inside a cell around 11.30 a.m., on Wednesday by a police officer who was making a check on prisoners.

Earlier in the day, the suspect had been placed on several identification parades at the same station in connection with armed robbery offences within the Northern Division.

After he was discovered bleeding, he was taken to the Arima District Hospital where he was treated and later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in stable condition under police guard.

He is also wanted by Western Division officers in connection with several armed robberies in the community, police said.

Police said the suspects, including a 22-year-old man from Malabar, Arima, were arrested around 4.45 a.m. on Sunday by officers of the Northern Division Task Force at Cleaver Road, Arima.

Task Force officers had responded to a report two men were seen looking into the premises of several homes in the area. Officers said when they arrived the suspects began to run and a chase ensued.

They were subsequently held and they were found to be in possession of a 9 mm pistol, 13 rounds of ammunition, ski masks, duct tape and several pairs of gloves.

Officers believe the suspects were looking to see which of the homes had no guard dogs before they tried to break in. Police believe the men may have been responsible for robberies where they tied up occupants of several homes and stole thousands of dollars in cash, jewelry and house hold electronics and appliances.

Several cars which were also stolen during similar robberies were later found abandoned in the Western Division, police said.
