A SANTA CRUZ man was murdered yesterday, but the gunmen took steps to ensure that the man’s wife and child were unharmed.
The murder toll for the year to date stood at 37 up to last night, while the figure on January 21 last year was 22.
Police said the incident occurred shortly after noon at the Upper Pipiol Road home of the victim, 24-year-old Andrew Ramdhanie.
Police said two gunmen barged into Ramdhanie’s home and pointed guns at him, his wife and one of his three children. The other two children were not at home at the time.
The gunmen then tied up Ramdhanie’s wife and son and placed them in one of the bedrooms of the small house. The killers then opened fire, ran out the house and escaped in a waiting car.
The man’s wife later freed herself and the child and walked out the house and alerted her neighbours about what happened.
Ramdhanie was barely alive when they rushed him to Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex at Mt Hope, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Prior to his demise, Ramdhanie told neighbours that his life was being threatened and he only recently returned to his home in Santa Cruz after spending the last four months at an undisclosed location.
Neighbours were unable to say why the man’s life was being threatened, but the police have classified his murder as gang-related.
Homicide Bureau officers are continuing investigations.
