Sex offender, 61, shot dead by cops
A SIXTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD sexual offender was shot by the police on Tuesday night and later died at Port of Spain General Hospital as a result of a loss of blood.
The deceased, Kenneth Charles of La Seiva Village, Maraval, was wanted in connection with a series of sexual offences, including in the St Clair district, in the last two years.
Police said around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, sergeants Elli and Walker of St Clair Police Station received information the suspect was hiding out in an abandoned house in the hills of Maraval.
The officers led a team into the area where a search was carried out for the suspect.
Police say when they confronted the man he attacked them with a cutlass, following which he was shot in the leg.
Charles was then brought out of the treacherous hilly terrain and taken to Port of Spain General Hospital, where he was attended to and warded.
He subsequently died during the wee hours yesterday.
A cutlass was seized at the scene and investigations are continuing in the matter.
