Son found hanging; case against mom to begin
THE preliminary enquiry in which a woman allegedly killed her son by hanging him with a curtain is set to begin next week.
The case against Marcia Harper came up for hearing yesterday before San Fernando Magistrate Rae Roopchan.
State prosecutor Sarah De Silva told the court that the prosecution would be calling six witnesses to give oral evidence in the matter although the case will be proceeding by way of paper committal.
Paper committal is a faster process than a preliminary enquiry.
It consists of recorded statements from prosecution witnesses being entered into evidence and the defence selecting witnesses for cross-examination.
De Silva told the court that approximately 12 witness statements had been filed.
Roopchan set the matter to begin next Thursday.
Harper, 30, was charged by Corporal Beharry with the murder of her eight-year-old son, De’Mario Raghunanan.
Last November, the standard two pupil was found hanging from a curtain in a bedroom of the family’s Ste Madeleine home.
Harper is being represented by attorney Owen Hinds Jr.
