St Michael's School mum after report

CARLTON Collins, head of the St Michael's School for Boys, said yesterday he needed clearance from the Gender Affairs Ministry before he could comment on a study of the boys home in Diego Martin by Prof Selwyn Ryan.

The report, entitled No Time To Quit—Engaging Youth At Risk, singled out the boys' home as a recruitment area for both paedophiles and gang leaders and, according to Ryan, "the behaviour of the boys worsened over the years and many of them challenge, defy or disrespect the authorities". Ryan even stated he was told some of the "lads" grew marijuana on the fringe of the home's 50-acre estate on which the school sits.

Contacted yesterday, however, Collins, who is also the calypsonian Manchild, was unwilling to speak.
