Stand-off could end by next week

Impasse at Tunapuna Hindu School

The months of stand-off between Tunapuna Hindu School principal Sita Gajadharsingh-Nanga and the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha board could end as early as next week.

Hyacinth Guy, chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TSC), yesterday promised a speedy resolution to the continued impasse, saying Gajadharsingh-Nanga had already been interviewed and the process was now "taking its due course".

"We are considering all the other options, because there are other people vying for the school she wants and we have to act in accordance with the regulations," she said, adding though that the process was being "expedited" because of the extenuating circumstances of the situation.

Guy and the rest of the TSC board faced a series a questions from the Government's Joint Select Committee (JSC) at the Office of Parliament at the International Waterfront Centre in Port of Spain yesterday.

Speaking with the media after the JSC meeting, Guy said Gajadharsingh-Nanga had already been interviewed for another batch of schools and a decision is expected within the next week or two.

"The thing that we have done is expedited the process, recognising that it is not a normal situation and we could not sit back and say whenever it happens it happens," she said.

"Now she is already a principal so she does not have to be interviewed for that post, but what we have to do is assess her suitability for the particular school she has applied for or see whether there are any other schools she can fit into comfortably," she said.

Guy said the only time the process can be stalled at this time is if Gajadharsingh-Nanga is not appointed to the school of her choice and refuses any of the other options.

"We have to have some type of discussion with her you know we don't want to do anything forcibly and we would like her to be comfortable," she said.

Guy said the TSC will meet again on February 15th and expected a final decision before then.

With regard to the similar situation at ASJA Girls' College in San Fernando, where parents attempted to lock out a teacher who they claimed was responsible for the suspension of the school's principal by the Ministry of Education, she said:

"We are waiting the investigative report from the Education Ministry on that."
