A Couva mother was shot dead today, weeks after receiving death threats not to testify in a court case. Stacy Roopan, 25, was killed at Isaiah Street as she walked towards a pre-school to pick up her three year old son.

Roopan's killing was recorded as the 50th person to be murdered this year.

Her father, Lutchman Roopan, said that in December his daughter's car was broken into and she was threatened if she testified in a court case.

Lutchman Roopan told the Express that he last talked to his daughter at around 1.25 p.m. at their home. She said she was going to pick up her son.

Within five minutes, the father said, he heard several loud explosions, and later found out his daughter was shot dead on the street.
A party of police officers of the Central Division led by Senior Superintendent Johnny Abraham and Sgt Susan John visited the scene.

The body was examined by a district medical officer and taken to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy tomorrow.
