Suicide in Couva Magistrates' Court
...prisoner hangs self after being sentenced to 12 months in prison

POLICE are investigating the suicide death of a 37-year-old Couva man at the Couva Magistrates' Court.
According to reports Sheraz Ali of Phoenix Park, Couva was found hanging in the holding cell at around 12.45p.m..
The man had been sentenced by Magistrate Rae Roopchand for the possession of counterfeit US currency.
According to police reports Ali went to a business place in Balmain Couva and attempted to make a purchase using US currency. The proprietor became suspicious and alerted the authorities.
Ali was found to have been in possession of $2,300 in fake bills.
He went before Roopchand today and pleaded guilty to the offence.
After being sentenced, Ali was left in a holding cell, until he was taken into prison custody and transported to prison. While in the holding cell, he reportedly used his belt to hang himself.
